We got notification on Friday from Sandy Paterson that the consultation on the development of Glasgow’s parks and greenspaces , Our Dear Green Place, would stay open for comments until Friday May 18th although the exercise officially closed on May 11th. The part of the document relating directly to allotments runs from page 19-21. We think the sections which follow on Learning, Diversity and Inclusion and Sustainability (pages 22-35) are also of interest to Associations and plotholders as are those on Partnership, Delivery Mechanisms (for the plan) and Financial Sustainability (pages 41 – 49).

For those of you wanting to contact an allotment site for which we don’t currently have any contact details you’ll now find information for getting in touch with Sandy Paterson – who is the person who liaises with allotments sites on behalf of Glasgow City Council – on the New Plotholders page.
In January, Glasgow Allotments Forum agreed to award three prizes of £500 for the best improvement proposal presented by allotment associations in each of three areas of the City: the South, the North West and the North East.
The presentations and voting for the ADA took place on April 20th. The proposals for development were based on the sustainability criteria:
- Caring for the Earth
- Building the Allotment Association as a Community
- Making Local Connections
After the the presentations, there was time for coffee and chat before the voting took place. The break resulted in a lot of lively discussions and sharing of ideas. Useful connections were made with groups arranging visits and support for their projects. Councillors Martha Wardrop and Maggie McTernan came and made helpful suggestions for other places where funding or material could be found as well as presenting the awards.
The winning projects were South Western Allotments – contribution to the on-going development of their community garden; Springburn Gardens – refurbishment of old kennels to enable schools to use a wild life area for outdoor learning; High Carntyne – regenerating a dump area with a pond and planting for wildlife.
Altogether an interesting and worthwhile initiative. We look forward to reports of the progress of the projects next year.
The GAF meeting on May 3rd will be about ways of making allotments more appealing to families and young people.
Glasgow Allotments is a site under construction. So far I have managed to load up the names and addresses of all the allotment sites across the City. However, the information about how to contact the various allotment associations which manage the sites on a day-to-day basis is still incomplete. If I haven’t got an accurate contact address for your site please let me know.
